Tailor-made stair renovation for every home

Fitting a stair renovation usually takes just one day. Our fitters arrive in the morning, and by the evening you're simply walking on your new staircase again. There's no demolition work, and the staircase stays usable all day in case of an emergency.

For larger projects (for example two staircases, or a staircase plus flooring) it may take longer. You'll hear about the schedule beforehand, so you know exactly where you stand.

Both are synthetic and offer the same practical benefits: they're hard-wearing, slip-resistant, colourfast and easy to keep clean. Vinyl (PVC) is slightly more hard-wearing, which is why it's also widely used in commercial buildings and schools. In a home, though, that difference is rarely decisive.

Our honest advice: choose by decor. You choose a synthetic product for its ease of use, and both do well on that front, so let your eye decide which colour and look suit your interior best. Your adviser will bring samples of both.

One important warning: many people confuse our vinyl (PVC) overlay treads with vinyl (PVC) floor planks. Interior decorators and flooring shops sometimes glue rigid floor planks onto a wooden staircase and finish them off with profiles. This leaves raised edges where dirt collects, and the bonding often causes problems: the wood underneath is always moving, and the adhesive isn't designed for that. Our overlay treads are made specially for staircases: in one piece, with no separate profiles, and bonded with an adhesive that can move with the wood.

Yes, the staircase won't become slippery. Slip resistance is actually one of the strong points of our treads. The top layer of our synthetic products (laminate and vinyl (PVC)) has been developed specially for use on staircases. Aluminium dust is incorporated into this top layer, which makes the surface extremely hard-wearing and gives it the resistance (grip) you want on a staircase, even when you're walking in socks.

Our treads have an anti-slip rating of R9 or R10. The R-value is the official standard for the slip resistance of floors (the scale runs from R9 to R13 inclusive). For comparison: R9 is the class for ordinary living spaces, while R10 is used in places where extra grip is needed, such as bathrooms and kitchens. An ordinary smooth laminate floor that isn't made for stairs often doesn't offer that level of grip, which is why it's important to use material designed specifically for staircases.

This means you don't need to stick separate anti-slip strips or rubber pads onto the treads: the safety is built into the material itself.

Our stair renovation comes with a 20-year guarantee against the top layer of the treads wearing through. That says a lot about the quality and durability of the material we use. In practice, you can expect a renovated staircase to last much longer – the guarantee period is a minimum, not an expiry date. Yes, you never have to choose from a picture. Your adviser will bring colour samples and material examples to the free in-home consultation, so you can look at them at home in your own light – next to your floor, because a staircase connects two storeys and has to look good with both floors.

The lead time is normally 4 to 6 weeks from the moment you give your approval. During this time, every tread is made to measure and the installation is scheduled.

Does it need to be quicker, for example because your renovation or house move depends on it? Just let us know and we will do everything we can to get it done sooner. Stairz usually keeps the materials in stock in our own warehouse, so we can act quickly and don't depend on third-party delivery times.

The installation itself then usually takes one day, and by the evening you can simply use your staircase again.
